Discover 400 years of history at Huygens’ Hofwijck

Huygens’ Hofwijck in Voorburg focuses on two key Dutch scientists from the Golden Age: Constantijn and Christiaan Huygens. The museum focuses on the brothers’ unique influence on 17th century literature, science, music, architecture and their lifelong bond with the royal family.

The life and work of Constantijn Huygens can be admired at the Hofwijck country estate, which he designed. Huygens (1596-1687) was a fascinating, multi-faceted man. He was counsellor of the Stadthouders of Orange and in his free time, he was a skilled practitioner of arts and science. When he wanted to escape the turbulence of political life in The Hague, he retreated to the harmonious surroundings of Hofwijck. In 2004, the garden of the Hofwijck estate was reconstructed based on the original design by Constantijn Huygens from 1640.

Did you know that..

The garden is shaped like a human body?

In 2018, scientific research provided evidence that Leidschendam is the birthplace of Dutch football. Because until 1882, Leidschendam was home to Jongenskostschool Noorthey, where the first football match on Dutch soil was played around 1864.
