Discover houtzaagmolen De Salamander
De Salamander is a typical Dutch sawmill, located in Leidschendam. While we don’t know when the mill was first built, we know it was reconstructed around 1778, after it was destroyed in a huge fire. After the second sawmill, De Hoop, also burnt down in 1895, a steam engine was installed so that sawing could continue in windless conditions, which was quite new in those days. This steam engine was fired with scrap wood.
The sawmill remained in operation until 1953, after which it fell into disrepair and was no longer maintained. After several decades, the Stichting Opbouw Salamander was founded, which organised the reconstruction and maintenance of the mill. The working sawmill is certainly worth a visit! After visiting the sawmill, you can also go for a stroll along De Oude Vliet!
Opening hours
The mill is open to visitors every Wednesday and Saturday from 12.00 to 16.00. Guides are present to welcome visitors and show them round the mill. And if there’s enough wind, the millers will obviously get the mill working.
