Huygens’ Swaensteyn

Huygens’ Swaensteyn is home to history, arts and culture from Voorburg and Leidschendam. The museum is housed in the Notarishuis on the Herenstraat, one of the oldest buildings in Voorburg’s Huygenskwartier.

Lock in Leidschendam

Around the lock in the historic centre of Leidschendam, there are several terraces, cafés and restaurants. Leidschendam has a remarkable history, which you can really feel near the lock.

Huygens’ Hofwijck

Museum Hofwijck in Voorburg focuses on two key Dutch figures from the Golden Age: Constantijn and Christiaan Huygens. In 2004, the garden of the Hofwijck estate was reconstructed based on the original. This is a wonderful place for walking!

Central Park Voorburg

At boutique hotel Central Park Voorburg, romance is always in the air. Housed in a national monument with a beautifully designed interior, the hotel provides a special holiday atmosphere. The restaurant also offers a very impressive selection of dishes.

Het Veur Theater

Het Veur Theater is the place to go for performances and parties! The theatre is housed in a church building dating from 1908, which contributes to the unique atmosphere. All year round, it hosts special plays, one-man-shows, cabaret performances and more.

National monuments in the municipality

Leidschendam-Voorburg has a rich cultural heritage, with nearly 90 designated national monuments and 400 municipal monuments. You will find gorgeous mansions, historic churches, interesting artworks and much more!

Poldermolen De Vlieger

Molen de Vlieger is a drainage windmill situated in the unique polder landscape of Essesteijn in Voorburg which also includes a petting zoo. The authentic mill, built in 1621, is still fully operational and currently in use as a museum.

Neherpark Leidschendam

One of the most characteristic buildings in Leidschendam is definitely the Neherlaboratory. It’s now slightly hidden behind modern apartments, when viewed from the J.S. Bachlaan, but the complex still dominates the neighbourhood with its characteristic tower.

Park Vreugd en Rust

The former estate Vreugd en Rust in Voorburg is now a public park with great amenities. Here you can go for long walks and enjoy the peace and quiet among all the greenery!

Ruiterstandbeeld Corbulo

Corbulo is the founder of Forum Hadriani, the current Voorburg. For over fifty years, his special equestrian statue has watched over the surroundings! The statue makes a nice stop in the city walk and is a lovely, artistic reflection of a unique piece of history.

Molendriegang Leidschendam

In the 17th century, seven mills were built in Stompwijk to drain the surrounding polders. The northernmost three were preserved. For lovers of photography, Dutch views and walks past historic locations, the Molendriegang is the place to be.

Huize Middenburg

Huize Middenburg is a very special building. The 17th century house is hidden behind the trees and shrubs. Around Huize Middenburg, you can enjoy walks in one of the two parks and relax on the grass.

Poldergemaal De Antagonist

At Poldergemaal De Antagonist, you experience a typical piece of Dutch history. The former steam pumping station was built in 1882. After its restoration at the start of this century, the polder pumping station became a museum where the history of the region really comes to life!

Houtzaagmolen de Salamander

De Salamander is a typical Dutch sawmill, located in Leidschendam. The mill was rebuilt in 1778. A steam engine was installed so that sawing could continue in windless conditions, a technique which was quite new in those days.

Stone bench (Juliana-Bernhardpark)

In 1947, on the occasion of the wedding of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard, a commemorative bench was built in the style of the Nieuwe Haagsche School with sculptural features by sculptor Albert Termote.

Informational panel Voetbal Noortheylaan

In 2018, scientific research provided evidence that Leidschendam is the birthplace of Dutch football. Because until 1882, Leidschendam was home to Jongenskostschool Noorthey, where the first football match on Dutch soil was played around 1864.

Ancient Roman city Forum Hadriani

On the site of what is now Voorburg, there was once a Gallo-Roman city, the northernmost city on the European mainland: Forum Hadriani.

Oude- of Martinikerk

The Oude- of Martinikerk has a unique history, starting around the year 1200. You can still admire the largely medieval feel of the church today!
